Ariel is a fictitious character and the central character of the 28th animated film by Walt Disney Pictures, “The Little Mermaid” (1989). She also features in the movie’s prequel television series (1992-1994), the direct-to-video sequel “The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea” (2000), and the direct-to-video prequel “The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning” (2008). Jodi Benson provides the voice for Ariel in all official animated portrayals and associated merchandise. Ariel holds the fourth position in the Disney Princess line-up, making her the first princess who is not human, and the sole princess who experiences motherhood in the franchise by having her own child.
